Event Details

We meet at la Fenice opera house and our entertaining tour starts by following Giacomo Casanova's footsteps, taking you back to the Venice Carnival of the XVIII century.
On this informative and fun walking tour, our masked guide will acquaint you with the story of Venice Carnival, then and now; learn about the history of masks, once used to hide the person's identity, and how they are made. Casanova was a great lover and adventurer, extremely extravagant, a freemason and a servant of the establishment.
Born in Venice. He grew up in the area of San Samuele.

Following your guide through the narrow Calle (alleys) passing his home and also the house of the famous poet Giorgio Baffo, who introduced the young Casanova to the worldly pleasures.
Learn about the Ridotto, the first Casinò in Venice often an easy meeting place for Casanova and the beloved Venetian Aristocracy. Hear fascinating stories about the Venetian Courtesans who also did their part to make the city as animated as possible. A completely different narrated walking tour filled with desire and passion, pleasure and entertainment. We end our tour with a hot cappuccino and a typical Venetian Carnival cake "Frittelle" in a typical Caffe approx. 10 mins walk from St Mark’s Square.

This is a very specialised tour and we recommend that you book early as we only have a select group of guides who can guarantee this tour!!!

In each bar or in venetian "bacaro" you will be offered an "Ombra", a glass of local wine, and at the final bar you will have the chance to try the very popular Venetian "SPRITZ".

You will also taste the typical venetian cicchetti (tapas) in each bacaro.

Exhibition of historical costumes by Atelier Pietro Longhi, made by Francesco Briggi and curated by Raffaele Dessì

The exhibition “Fashion Stories” will show for the first time all the social classes that lived in the Serenissima, thanks to cross-sections of the carnivals over the centuries. The propensity of the Scuola Grande to welcome representatives of all social classes, with a large presence of women, a very rare reality in the past, inspired the birth of an exhibition that was not limited in its description only to the high classes, usually in the center of the studies given the quantity of documents and the speed with which the shapes of the clothes changed.

The prestigious venue, unique in its kind and preciousness, the summa of Venetian Baroque architecture and art opens its doors to Francesco Briggi tailor of the Atelier Pietro Longhi, who made all the clothes with their accessories, and to Dr. Raffaele Dessì who oversaw the entire exhibition in terms of contents and set-up, allowing the creation of the exhibition “Fashion Stories – Carnival tales”. This exhibition tells the story of Venice through one of the most important characteristics of its material culture: clothing and the materials connected to it.

In 20 costumes, faithfully reproduced by Francesco Briggi from original documents or taken from paintings by the most important Venetian painters, it is shown how much trade first and then manufacturing art, linked to fashion, were the fundamental engine for the development and affirmation of the Venetian myth from the Middle Ages to the mid-1700s, up to the present day with excellences that are exported from the lagoon all over the world.

Three periods were examined: the early Renaissance, with the representatives of the “compagnie di calza” (stocking companies), followed by a section of the early 1600s, ending with a section dedicated to the famous Venetian Carnival of 1700, the engine of the rebirth in the ‘ 80 of the last century.

A selection of costumes that represent almost four hundred years of Venetian traditionstales and stories, to be enjoyed together with the beauty of the Scuola Grande dei Carmini.

TEATRO LA FENICE

teatro di musica
composed by Giorgio Battistelli | libretto by Giorgio Battistelli and Damiano Michieletto

With 13 solo singers, a brass-studded orchestra, and 30 percussions divided in two groups, Giorgio Battistelli tackles the 1762 play Le baruffe chiozzotte (Brawling in Chioggia). In the 1920s, Carlo Goldoni’s witty farce – depicting some incidents in the daily life of fishermen in the lagoon village of Chioggia by Venice – was set to music by Franco Leoni and Gian Francesco Malipiero. Battistelli’s opera, commissioned by La Fenice, was originally slated for world premiere in 2020, but had to be postponed due to the epidemics. Stage director Damiano Michieletto, a trueborn Venetian, helped the composer in the adaptation of the sung text, whose fringe dialect already sounded exotic to the 18th-century urban public.
